There are several types of hearing solutions available, each designed to cater to different levels of hearing loss and individual needs.
The choice of hearing solution depends on the type and severity of hearing loss, lifestyle, personal preferences, and other factors. It's important to consult with an audiologist or hearing care professional to determine the most appropriate option.
Hearing Aids
The most common solution, these are electronic devices worn in or behind the ear. They amplify sound and are suitable for a range of hearing loss levels. Types of hearing aids include: Behind-the-Ear (BTE), Receiver-in-Canal (RIC), In-the-Ear (ITE), In-the-Canal (ITC), Completely-in-Canal (CIC) and IIC (invisible-in-Canal).
Cochlear Implants
These are surgically implanted electronic devices that provide a sense of sound to individuals who are profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. Cochlear implants bypass the damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs)
These include amplified telephones, FM systems, infrared systems, and personal amplifiers. They are often used in conjunction with hearing aids to improve hearing in specific situations, like watching TV or in noisy environments.
CROS and BiCROS Hearing Aids
Designed for individuals with unilateral hearing loss (single sided), CROS (Contralateral Routing of Signal) systems pick up sound from the deaf ear and transmit it to the hearing ear. BiCROS aids do the same, but also amplify sound in the hearing ear.
Bone Anchored Hearing Systems (BAHS)
Ideal for people with conductive hearing loss, unilateral hearing loss, or mixed hearing loss, who are unable to wear conventional hearing aids due to problems such as chronic ear infections or discharging ears. These devices use bone conduction to transmit sound through the skull bone directly to the inner ear.
