The Australian Government’s Hearing Services Program offers subsidised hearing services to eligible citizens and residents, providing comprehensive support for those with hearing needs. The eligibility criteria for these services are detailed below.
Eligibility for Subsidised Hearing Services
Australian citizens or permanent residents aged over 26 years who are in one of the following eligible categories.
- Pensioner Concession Card holders.
- Recipients of Sickness Allowance from Centrelink.
- Holders of a Gold Repatriation Health Card issued for all conditions.
- Holders of a White Repatriation Health Card issued specifically for conditions that include hearing loss.
- Dependants of persons in any of the above categories (names must be listed on the concession card holder's card)
- Members of the Australian Defence Force.
- Participants in the Australian Government funded Disability Employment Services (DES) – Disability Management Service, referred by their DES case manager.
Services Offered
- Bulk-billed Hearing Tests: Comprehensive hearing assessments are provided at no cost to eligible individuals once every 5 years. These tests are crucial for diagnosing hearing conditions and determining the most appropriate course of action.
- Hearing Aids and Devices: Depending on the results of the hearing tests, eligible individuals may receive subsidised hearing aids or other assistive listening devices.
- Audiological Support and Rehabilitation: Beyond providing hearing devices, the program may include audiological support services like rehabilitation, which helps individuals adapt to their hearing aids and improve their communication skills, as well as aid adjustments, cleaning, servicing and minor repairs.
